Creating Transparent GIFs in Photoshop

by bcanada

  1. Load the Gif you wish to convert.

  2. At the tools bar choose IMAGE=> MODE and click on RGB

  3. Make sure Layer Pallet is open. If not choose windows from the tools bar and choose “show layers”.

  4. Choose Layers from the tools bar and “New from background”. Make sure the name of the layer is “Layer 0”.

  5. Choose Layers again from the tools bar and “New” (not from background). Make sure the name is “Layer 1”

  6. On the layers pallet place the mouse icon over the selection bar of “layer 1” and drag “layer 1” to the bottom of the list while holding down the left mouse button. The layer pallet should now read from top to bottom “layer 0” which has your image and “layer1” which has only transparent pixels.

  7. Making sure that “layer 0” is selected or highlighted in the layers pallet choose “Select from the tool bar and choose “Color Range”. A small window appears from which you must select the white portion of a representative icon of your image. CLK OK. You will now see moving outlines or the area that is to receive the transparent pixels.

Note that sometimes Photoshop has chosen pixels you do not wish to be tampered with. If this is the case remember or memorize the areas you do not want affected and press the masking key from the tools pallet. Next select the paintbrush from the tools pallet and paint the areas that should not have their pixels changed. Note the brush signifies by painting the areas red. When finished painting you may now select “Edit in standard mode” button (its directly to the left of the masking button on the tool pallet).

  8. You should now be looking at moving outlines that only select the desired pixels to be made into transparent pixels. Choose Edit form the tools bar and press “Clear” You now have a transparent GIF.
    9. Select file/save for web from the tools bar. From the generated window make sure you’ve selected Gif as the file format and that “transparent” is checked. CLK OK.

  9. Select your desired name and where you want to save on your hard drive. Save and your done.
