Colorization by Tint Variations

1. Download greyrose.jpg by right clicking on the link and selecting "save target as"

2. Open the Greyrose.jpg from your hard drive.

3. Set the image Mode to RGB to edit

• Go to Image-->Mode-->RGB Color.
   

4. Adjust the brightness/contrast

• Go to Image--> Adjust-->Brightness/Contrast.
• Set Brightness to +50
• click okay.

This will make the rose lighter so that the colors will show through better.

5. Adjusting the color tints:

• Go to Image-->Adjust-->Variations. This will bring up the
  variations panel.

• The top left hand images are the original (image you started with)
  and your current pick.
• The images on the right show your current selection and one shade
  lighter and one shade darker. To select lighter, just click on that
  image, same with darker.
• The images on the lower left show current pick in the middle and what
  that pick will look like with one click on the color or your choice.
• If you want to add red, click on more red. The more times you click on a
  color the more of that color you are adding. Remember, this is tinting,
  not painting so it is not the same effect.
• At the top just to the right of the pics are some settings. You should
  click on shadows to change the darker, shadowy parts of the picture.
  Click on midtones to change the middle colored parts or main color.
  Click on highlights to change the lightest, brightest parts of the
  picture.
• You can use any number of combinations of colors on each of these three
  selections. By using different colors on the different parts, ie shadows,
  midtones, and highlights, you can get some really interesting effects.
• You can use one color for each or a combination of different colors on each.
  Experiment, it's fun to see what you can come up with.
• The finished rose at the end of this tutorial was done with red and magenta
  in the shadows and midtones which made it a pretty pink. Then I used cyan
  for the highlights and voila, a beautiful blue rose.
• If you click on saturation, the color pick portion changes to three pics
  where you can choose the amount of color saturation you would like. This
  you can also experiment with along with lightness and darkness.
• The fine/coarse slider bar is for the finess or coarseness of the
  saturation.
• If you like the effect that you come up with you can use the load button
  to load it and save button to save it for future use.
• Clicking cancel will take you out of the variations panel and back to the
  original image on your workspace and clicking ok will change your original
  to your current pick.
