Creating Seamless Background Tiles

Download the required file to complete this tutorial by right clicking the filename and select save file as.

1. Open a file called fairytile that is 300 wide by  X 400 high, RGB, 72 ppi, white background.

2. Insert a new layer and call it Fairy Tile

3. Select a bright color for your foreground color, such as pink, yellow, or green.  Turn the eye off on the background layer.

4. Use the paint bucket fill tool and fill the layer Fairy Tile with it.

5. Create a new layer. Call the layer Clouds.

6. Hit the D key to set your color palette to black in foreground. Use the Fill tool to fill the clouds layer black.

7. Click Filter => Render => Clouds.

8. Set the clouds layer to Screen mode.


6. Open the Fairy picture.

7. Select the Lasso tool and set feather to 10 pixels. Lasso around the fairy.

8. Switch to the move tool and drag the fairy from the fairy picture to the fairytile image and drop it.

9. Using the move tool with bounding boxes selected, resize the angel and position the fairy in the center. Make the fairy smaller a bit smaller then the canvas.

10. Set the new layer with the fairy to between 40 - 50% opacity.

11. Click Layer => Merge Visible

12. Click Filter => Other => Offset

  • Set horizontal to 150 (1/2 of the width of the image)
  • Set Vertical to 150 (1/2 the height of the image.)

13. Zoom in on your image about 300% but selecting the zoom tool and clicking your image 3 times.

14. Select the rubber stamp tool .

  1. Select the brush at about  21 pixels soft brush. Smaller images will need a smaller brush, larger images will need a larger brush, however they are always soft brushes.
  2. Notice the horizontal and vertical line on your image. Find the other areas where there is no join line.
  3. Hold down the Alt Key and click in the "Line Free" zone.
  4. Click back on the line and along the line about 2 to 3 clicks on either side of the first click.
  5. Repeat 3 and 4 until the entire line disappears.

15. Resize your tile by clicking Image=>resize.
