Request a Tutorial

LCD SCREEN

Step 1:  Open a 300 x 300 canvas, 72 dpi, white background.

Step 2:  Hit 'D'  key to reset default colors.  Select the Round Edge Rectangle Shape tool and draw your shape in the middle of the canvas.

Step 3:  Create a new layer.  Control+Click on the shape layer to make it a selection.  Go to Select/Modify and Contract by 4 pixels (you might have to try other settings depending on the size of your original shape).  Fill this with the color of your choice.  In this tutorial the hex is 659AD1.  Do not deselect.

Step 4:  Making the grid.  Open a new canvas 20 x 20 pixels, transparent background.  Magnify to around 800%.  Select a 1 pixel square brush (either in black or navy and using your shift key to draw a straight line, make a cross like this. Go to Edit/Define Pattern.  Save this as a psd in your textures folder for use later.

Step 5:  Returning to the LCD canvas, create a new layer and go to Edit/Fill select pattern and fill with pattern you just made.  Lower layer opacity to somewhere between 20-30%.  You can now hit Ctrl+D to deselect.

Step 6:  Create a new layer above the background layer.  Right-click on the original black layer.  Go to Select/Expand and enter 5 pixels.  Fill with A9A4A4.

Step 7:  Double click on this layer to bring up the layer styles dialog box and check inner shadow, click on Inner Shadow to bring up those options.  Set  Angle at 0 and change Contour to Cove shallow.

Step 8:  Create a new layer above your grid layer.  Right click on original black layer and go to Modify/Contract and enter 2 pixels.  Fill this layer with white and deselect.

Step 9:  Using a Size 300 hard brush (this will allow you to obtain a subtle curve on the upper left corner, erase all white except this corner.  Use a smaller brush to erase what's left behind.  Drop opacity to around 25-30%..

Step 10:  Right-click on the highlight layer to duplicate it.  Go to Edit/Transform/Flip Horizontally and then vertically and position in the bottom right corner.  Change opacity of this later to around 10%.

Step 11:  Create a new layer above all the other layers.  Right click on blue layer to make it a selection.  Go to Edit/Fill 50% Grey.  Go to Filter/Render/Lens Flare and position the flare like the one on the left.

Step 12:  Change the layer blending mode to hard light and you should now have something like this.  Play around with it, you may decide to remove the corner highlights.

Voila!  The basic LCD Screen.  I decide I didn't much care for the blue I had use and so did a color overlay in the layer styles of that layer.  Add whatever text you wish, try different effect in the layer styles, and add to it as you wish!  The possibilities are endless!

Have fun experimenting!  Luv & Light Dreamcatcher.
