Creating and Scripting Scenes

In this lesson you will learn how to create scenes, name scenes correctly, and script buttons to navigating from scene to scene.

  • You will need this file to complete this tutorial

1. Unzip and open the flash file in Flash MX.

2. Notice the movie consists of one frame on a background layer and navigation layer. Add a Layer on the layers panel and name the new layer Scripts. Click in frame 1 of your scripts layer. Open your scripts panel. Click actions=> Movie Control=> Stop.

3. Click Window=> Scene to open the scene panel. In the scene panel you will see just one scene called Scene1. Double click the name of the scene, and rename it home.
 

4. Click the Duplicate scene button at the bottom of the scene panel. Rename the new scene about.

5. Click the Duplicate scene button at the bottom of the scene panel again. Rename the new scene listings


6. Create scenes for directory and contact us also buy duplicating the bottom scene. The order of the scenes is the order in which they will play on the timeline.

7. When you click on a scene, the scene displayed in the timeline and on the stage changes to that scene. The info bar shows which scene is currently open. There is also a jump menu on the info bar that you can use to change between scenes.

8. Click the edit scene jump menu and select about to open the about scene. When the info bar shows about on the left side, it is open.  Select your arrow tool. Click on your stage on the main house icon. to highlight it.

9. Open your properties inspector. The properties window should show the movie clip instance of : home. We do not want this movie clip on our about page, but we do want the clip called about. Click the Swap button.

10. A swap window opens and displays the library contents which is available for swapping. Select the about movie clip and click ok.


11. Use the edit scene button to jump to the contactus scene. Click in the middle of the stage on the house. Check the properties inspector to insure that your movie clip, instance of: home is highlighted. Click swap. Select the contactus movie clip and click ok.

12. Use the edit scene button to jump to the directory scene. Click in the middle of the stage on the house. Check the properties inspector to insure that your movie clip, instance of: home is highlighted. Click swap. Select the directory movie clip and click ok.

13.  Use the edit scene button to jump to the listing scene. Click in the middle of the stage on the house. Check the properties inspector to insure that your movie clip, instance of: home is highlighted. Click swap. Select the listings movie clip and click ok.

The scenes are created. Now to script the navigation bar.

14. Open your home scene. Lock the background layer. Click on the home button. Open your Actions panel. Click actions=> movie control=> goto from the list on the left.

Set the bullet for gotoAndStop. Set the scene to home, frame number, 1

15. Click on the Listings button to highlight it. Add the goto script.  Set the bullet for gotoAndStop. Set the scene to listings, frame number, 1.

16. Click on the Directory button to highlight it. Add the goto script.  Set the bullet for gotoAndStop. Set the scene to directory, frame number, 1.

17. Click on the About button to highlight it. Add the goto script.  Set the bullet for gotoAndStop. Set the scene to about, frame number, 1.

18. Click on the Contact us button to highlight it. Add the goto script.  Set the bullet for gotoAndStop. Set the scene to contactus, frame number, 1.

19. Click directly on the frame 1 of the navigation layer. Right click on the frame and select Copy Frame.

20. Click the edit scene button and jump to the Listings scene. Click on frame 1 of the navigation layer. Right click on the frame and select Paste frame.

21. Repeat #20 for the directory, about and contactus scenes.

22. Test your movie. The buttons on the top horizontal navigation bar should work for you, taking you to the correct scene.
